Dog Days of August Swiss
July 27, 2008 · No Comments
The Dog Days of August swiss is underway. Though round 1 is in the books, there is still time to come out and join the fun.
We all know that summer is the time to go on vacation, or relax and go to the pool. Another way to beat the heat is to come out to the club and participate, in our air-conditioned club room at the Leo Lydon house …

New Yorker June Open Results
June 29, 2008 · No Comments
The 7th Annual New Yorker Open has come and gone. A total of 73 players braved the commute and the weather for five rounds of game 50 action. Our own Arthur Feurstein was part of the open section and finished with a respectable 2.5 points in five rounds of play against a strong group of players (8 of 33 entries were rated 2200+). New York tournament regular - IM Jay Bonin won the open section with a score of 4.5 points.
In the under 1800 section, William Dubinsky won the tournament with 4.5 points. Your reporter, had an up and down event, ending up with 2.5 points against lower rated competition (ironically, the exact same score as last year).
The good news was this annual event is always well organized, with an easy to reach central location, plenty of space and a well lit main room. The nearby bookstore and kibitz room is a great place to kill time between rounds. As I raced back to my car in the late afternoon deluge, with lightning and thunder echoing down the canyons of Manhattan, I was already thinking about next year’s event … (word of advice, take the bus or the train - parking costs $20 for up to 10 hours, but $49 if you go over!)

New Links
April 30, 2008 · 1 Comment
One of our club members was kind enough to point out a very interesting new site that was created by two students at NYU.

The site takes a multimedia approach to illustrating and explaining the world of chess. There are numerous photos and interactive sections with audio & video. If you want to take a few minutes and check it out, click the new link on the right hand side under our new Chess Culture & History section.
In addition, I have also added a new link section for Grandmaster websites. Please feel free to send in your suggestions for other interesting sites that we can link to.

And for those who say I don’t know a chess piece from my elbow, I have only one possible response …
… that’s not my elbow, it’s Gerry’s!
